大森詞国語辞典は、ドイツ人と在日韓国人という、パスポートの上では「日本人ではない」２人によって編まれた、新しく生み出された日本語の辞典。けれども彼らの人生、家族、そしてアイデンティティは、日本と日本語に深く結びついている。ひとりは日本で育ち、日本社会の中で社会化され、もうひとりは長年日本で暮らしてきた。現在、２人は主に日本語でやり取りをしながら、韓国語、ドイツ語、英語も用いています。

この辞典は、自分たちに属する場所を日本語の中につくろうとする試みである。日本語は、２人のアイデンティティを深く形づくってきた言語である一方で、その中にいてもなお、完全には迎え入れられていないと感じることのある言語でもある。

日本では、「日本人」と「日本人ではない者」との境界が、しばしば強く意識される。それは多くの国々と同じように、国語を流暢に話せることが、その社会への帰属を示す重要な指標として見なされているからです。日本語を上手に話すことは、たしかに多くの扉を開きます。けれども、それだけで「内側の人」と「外側の人」を隔てる線が消えるわけではない。

『大森詞国語辞典』は、ひとつの素朴な問いを投げかける。

人は、ある言語に新しい言葉を勝手に加えることができるのか。
そして、もしそれができないのなら、どの言語にも属さない言葉を生み出すことはできるのか。

このプロジェクトは、日本語の中にひとつの「大使館」のような場所を想像する。そこは、新しい言葉たちが存在できる言語的空間である。これらの言葉は日本語の文字で書かれ、日本語の発音に従いながら、日本、韓国、ドイツという複数の文化的経験を背景に生まれている。しかし、それらはまだ、一般に使われている意味での「日本語」の一部ではない。

だからといって、日本人がそれらの言葉から排除されるわけではない。むしろ、使ってもらうことは歓迎されている。

この辞典を、「言葉の大使館」だと考えてみてください。

大森詞国語辞典 — Daishinshi National Dictionary

Daishinshi Kokugo Jiten is a dictionary of newly created Japanese words compiled by a German and a Zainichi Korean—two people who, on paper, are not Japanese, yet whose lives, families, and identities are deeply intertwined with Japan and the Japanese language. One grew up and was socialized in Japan; the other spent a long time living there. Today, they communicate primarily in Japanese, but also in Korean, German, and English.

This dictionary is an attempt to create a place within the Japanese language that belongs to them. Japanese is a language that has profoundly shaped their identities, yet it is also a language in which they often feel only partially welcomed.

In Japan, the boundary between “Japanese” and “non-Japanese” is often strongly emphasized. As in many countries, fluency in the national language is frequently treated as a key marker of belonging. Speaking Japanese well can open doors—but it does not necessarily dissolve the line that separates those considered inside from those considered outside.

Daishinshi National Dictionary asks a simple question:
Can one contribute new words to a language? And if not, can one create words that belong to no language at all?

The project imagines a kind of embassy within Japanese, a linguistic space where new words can exist. These words are written with Japanese characters, follow Japanese pronunciation, and draw on Japanese, Korean, and German cultural experiences. Yet they are not (yet) part of the Japanese language as it is commonly used.

This does not mean that Japanese speakers are excluded from them. On the contrary, their use is welcome.
