Between 2023 and 2025, German photographer Claudia Fährenkemper traveled repeatedly to Jeju Island, South Korea, to spend time with the haenyeo community of Sinsan-ri. Haenyeo (해녀, literally “sea women”) are female free-divers who harvest seafood such as abalone, sea urchins, and octopus without the use of breathing equipment. For generations, they have formed the foundation of Jeju’s distinctive maritime culture and are internationally recognized for their ecological knowledge, diving skills, and communal traditions.

Living alongside the women and accompanying them in their daily work, Fährenkemper documented their lives through conversation and collaboration. This engagement resulted in the photographic series 대한민국 제주도 신산리 해녀 공동체 (The Haenyeo Community of Sinsan-ri, Jeju Island, South Korea), comprising more than 130 black-and-white photographs. The images were captured on a medium-format camera and later developed by Fährenkemper in her darkroom in Steinheim, Germany.

2023년부터 2025년 사이, 독일의 사진작가 클라우디아 페렌켐퍼(Claudia Fährenkemper)는 한국 제주도를 여러 차례 방문하여 신산리 해녀 공동체와 시간을 보냈다. 해녀(海女, 문자 그대로 “바다 여성”)는 호흡 장비 없이 전복, 성게, 문어 등 해산물을 채취하는 여성 프리다이버들이다. 이들은 여러 세대에 걸쳐 제주 고유의 해양 문화를 이루는 기반이 되어 왔으며, 생태학적 지식, 잠수 기술, 그리고 공동체적 전통으로 국제적으로도 잘 알려져 있다.

해녀들과 함께 생활하며 그들의 일상적인 작업에 동행한 페렌켐퍼는 대화와 협업을 통해 그들의 삶을 기록했다. 이러한 참여는 약 130점 이상의 흑백 사진으로 구성된 사진 시리즈 〈대한민국 제주도 신산리 해녀 공동체 (The Haenyeo Community of Sinsan-ri, Jeju Island, South Korea)〉로 이어졌다. 이 이미지는 중형 포맷 카메라로 촬영되었으며, 이후 독일 슈타인하임(Steinheim)에 위치한 그녀의 암실에서 직접 현상되었다.
