『大森詞国語辞典』は、在日韓国人の徐有慧（そゆへ）とドイツ出身のナウエンドーフまぶという、パスポート上では「日本人ではない」私たち二人が、新たに創り出した日本語を収録した辞典です。
私たちは日本において「外国人」として分類されますが、二人の人生は日本と日本語に深く結びついています。それは、「日本人になろうとする」というよりも、すでにこの場所に根ざして生きているという感覚に近いものです。
この辞典は、日本語の中に自分たちの居場所を見出そうとする試みです。日本では、「日本人」と「日本人ではない者」との境界が、しばしば強く意識されているように感じられます。それは多くの国と同様に、その国の言語を流暢に話せることが、社会への帰属を示す重要な指標とされているからでしょう。確かに、日本語を自在に操ることは多くの可能性を開きます。しかし、それだけで「内側の人」と「外側の人」とを隔てる線が消えるわけではありません。
そこで『大森詞国語辞典』は、二つの素朴な問いを投げかけます。
人は、ある言語に新しい言葉を自由に加えることができるのでしょうか。
そして、もしそれができないのなら、どの言語にも完全には属さない言葉を生み出すことはできるのでしょうか。
他の言語には存在するのに、自分の言語にはまだ存在していない言葉に憧れを抱くことがあるかもしれません。ですが、それを「欠けている」と感じる必要はありません。存在してほしい言葉があるのなら、自分たちで生み出すことができるのではないでしょうか。
このプロジェクトは、日本語の中にひとつの「大使館」のような場所を創り出す試みです。そこは、新しい言葉たちが存在するための言語的な空間です。それらの言葉は日本語の文字で書かれ、日本語の発音に従いながら、日本・韓国・ドイツという複数の文化的背景から生まれました。しかし、それらはまだ一般的な意味での「日本語」の一部とは言えません。
とはいえ、日本人がそれらの言葉から排除されるわけではありません。私たちは、すべての人にそれらの言葉を使ってほしいと願っています。
この辞典を、「言葉の大使館」として想像してみてください。

そうすることで、私たちは少しずつ隔たりを埋め、言語とアイデンティティ、そして帰属を分かつ境界を、やわらかくしていけるのかもしれません。

Between 2023 and 2025, German photographer Claudia Fährenkemper traveled repeatedly to Jeju Island, South Korea, to spend time with the haenyeo community of Sinsan-ri. Haenyeo (해녀, literally “sea women”) are female free-divers who harvest seafood such as abalone, sea urchins, and octopus without the use of breathing equipment. For generations, they have formed the foundation of Jeju’s distinctive maritime culture and are internationally recognized for their ecological knowledge, diving skills, and communal traditions.
Living alongside the women and accompanying them in their daily work, Fährenkemper documented their lives through conversation, and collaboration. This engagement resulted in the photographic series 대한민국 제주도 신산리 해녀 공동체 (The Haenyeo Community of Sinsan-ri, Jeju Island, South Korea), comprising more than 130 black-and-white photographs. The images were captured on a medium-format camera and later developed by Fährenkemper in her darkroom in Steinheim, Germany.
This publication presents the series and offers a visual record of a community whose knowledge, labor, and traditions continue to shape the cultural landscape of Jeju. Rather than focusing solely on the act of diving, the work explores the social fabric of the community: relationships between generations, collective labor, moments of rest, and the realities of life in a coastal village.
The first edition was produced by Kuina Books and designed by Mābu Nauendorff. Hand-bound in a limited edition of twenty copies, it is intended primarily for the haenyeo and for those directly involved in the project. A larger, commercially available second edition is currently in development.
The collaboration behind this publication began during research into diving cultures in East Asia. In late 2024, an interview with the haenyeo Jeon Yu-gyeong led to an introduction to Claudia Fährenkemper and her work. Through this connection, photographs of Yu-gyeong and other members of the Sinsan-ri community were later published in Linguaphile Issue 1 (Kuina Books, 2025).
Because this body of work was the foundation of that encounter, photographer and book designer decided to develop this publication collaboratively. From the outset, it was important that the book be for the haenyeo rather than merely about them. The first edition is therefore dedicated to the community itself.
